A lot of people say that "Things happen for a reason." I used to believe that too. Now I disagree. Things happen. Period. There is no fate, predetermination or destiny. Nothing is written in the stars. "Reasons" do not exist beforehand. The only formula is Cause and Effect. But that's no formula at all, since it's impossible to trace any event back indefinitely. Why did I spill the water? Because my hand hit the glass. Why did my hand hit the glass? Because I turned quickly. Why did I turn quickly? Because someone ran into the room. Why did that person run in? Because they were in a rush. Why a rush? Because the neighbor was sick and needed help. Why was the neighbor sick? Because she ate contaminated food. Why was the food contaminated? Because the waiter didn't wash his hands. Why did the waiter not wash his hands? Because he got to work late. Why late? Because he fought with his girlfriend. Why fight? Well... you see my point. Even Cause and Effect fails in explaining why something happened.

So what's left, if we can't make the assertion that things "happen for a reason"? Simple. Reasons are made up in our minds anyway. It's the meaning we assign to events. So when something happens, add whatever meaning you want, after the fact. Make up your own reasons. If you think carefully, you'll find one that is uplifting, empowering and happy. Don't chose one that's the opposite. Is the thing you hold in your hand a beautiful flower or a long stick with thorns and some petals on the end? Your point of view is a choice.
